Epiphany Learning Builds Equity for ELLs

Epiphany Learning helped Blair Elementary close gaps and support English Language Learners.
"Epiphany Learning’s built-in SMART goal tool and Learner Profile helped both students and teachers transition towards an individualized understanding of learning, while the Learning Continuum allowed them to tie each learning experience to those personalized goals as well as Common Core standards."

Blair Elementary School in Waukesha, Wisconsin is a Title I school that embodies the challenges facing education across the country. Blair serves a remarkably diverse student body, with nine different languages spoken by students and their parents at home and 58% of students identified as limited English proficiency. During the 2013-2014 school year, only 7.1% of that limited English proficiency cohort scored as proficient or better in English Language Arts, and less than 40% of the student body was assessed to be on track in terms of post-secondary readiness.

Leadership at Blair wasn’t satisfied with those results and made a commitment to improving results for their language learners and economically disadvantaged students. After some research, the team determined that personalized learning was the best way to close gaps and ensure that each individual student could achieve academically and use school time to grow in ways that would be useful to them.

Rolling out this new personalized learning program presented fresh challenges to the team at Blair, however. Teachers had to rethink their planning and assessment routines to harness the power of personalized learning. Students had to retool their understanding of school to embrace the new approach. Administrators and paraprofessionals needed to build a deep understanding of the new methodology to provide the best support.

That’s where the Epiphany Learning online management system stepped in to offer robust structure and powerful tools to support the personalized learning initiative at Blair. Epiphany Learning’s built-in SMART goal tool and Learner Profile helped both students and teachers transition towards an individualized understanding of learning, while the Learning Continuum allowed them to tie each learning experience to those personalized goals as well as Common Core standards.

Epiphany Learning didn’t just support personalized learning, though; it also helped the team at Blair meet their concrete goals for English language learners and economically disadvantaged students. Less than two years after adopting EL and personalized learning, Blair boosted that 7.1% ELA proficiency rate among LEP students to 22%. Blair students also saw their post-secondary readiness scores increase, with 49% of students now rated “basic,” “proficient,” or “advanced” as of the end of the 2015-2016 school year. These gains were noted by the state and reflected in Blair’s 90% score for “Closing Gaps” during the 2015-16 year.

Here are just a few things educators at Blair said about the Epiphany Learning Experience:

  • “Epiphany Learning provided us with a one-stop shop. I was able to gather information about the learner, monitor the goal-setting process, and reflect on growth all is one place for each learner in my class. Before Epiphany Learning, we were using 3 or 4 different apps or documents to collect and record this information. I didn’t always have accessibility to this information either. With my Epiphany Learning teacher account, I had all this information at my fingertips to use wherever and whenever!”

  • “Epiphany Learning has been a great scaffold for teachers to ease into the components of personalized learning as they are ready for them, as they are all at different points in their implementation/understanding of PL.”

– School Technology Integrator

  • “We really worked around the Learner Profile for goal setting, especially noticing what our strengths, interests and challenges were in order to make choices for ourselves within the learning cycle - specifically how we access, engage in and express learning. Learners would use their profiles to think about what their strengths are to elevate their learning.”
